Scripture memorization is an important part of our walk. This week, my memory verse was pretty long, but God allowed it to be applied in SO MANY ways, that it was impossible for me NOT to learn it. (With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. –Matthew 19:26)
It is also the main verse for the Sunday School lesson I prepared for my High School girl’s class tomorrow morning. (They don’t always line up, but this week they did). The lesson is about GOODNESS as a Fruit of the Spirit (from Galatians 5:22-23). In these verses, Paul illustrates goodness; he shows what goodness should look like. I was challenged this week to learn exactly what he meant and given plenty of opportunities to apply it to my own life. And now that the verses are memorized, I am equipped to remember, recall and apply them any time I need them – my sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) – and judging by how often they were applicable this week alone, I have a feeling I won’t be lacking in opportunities to draw this particular sword again!
I encourage you to pick a verse to memorize next week. You can do it – I know it doesn’t seem like it; with everything else you have going on – who can find the time? But trust me: I have a baby who was sick most of this week, I mentor a young woman each Monday, I teach Sunday School each Sunday, I had family in town half of this week and managed our home like I always do everyday, but even with all of that happening this week I was able to memorize 12 verses. It IS do-able; you can do it, God can enable you through the power of the Holy Spirit – ask Him to help you!
Post the verse(s) you plan on memorizing this week in the comments section and we can check in again next week and see how we all did!
(I have typed my memory verse out by memory. The texts in blue are the corrections I had to make after checking the verse).
Romans 12:9-21
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in Spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right and proper in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat feed him; if he is thirsty give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
